How to Layer Skincare Products | SIMPURE

The days of buying tons of skincare products and not knowing how to layer them to achieve maximum benefits are over. Designating certain products to your morning routine and others to your night routine will help you target a wider range of problems as well as some preventatives. How we layer our products directly impacts their effectiveness, and this guide will help you simplify what seems like an overwhelming process.

Your Guide to the Correct Order of Products

The simplest way to remember how your products should be applied is thinnest to thickest.

Step 1: Cleanse. We always want to start with a clean base to rid our skin of any dirt, oil, makeup, etc. This will allow your next products to properly do their job, instead of trying to do what your cleanser should.

Step 2: Tone. Think of your cleanser as a wash, and your toner as a polish. This step is going to follow up the cleansing process to make sure any residual grime is taken care of, as well as close your pores and balance your pH levels.

Step 3: Eye Cream. You will notice that most products say to avoid your eye area, but you want to make sure to give some attention to the most delicate part of your face. Applying before your moisturizer will allow your eye cream to soak in directly to the area.

Step 4: Serum. After toning you will want to lather on your hydrating serum. Having this as your next step will allow your serum to dive deeper into your skin as there is no barrier preventing it.

If you apply your serums after moisturizing, they would just sit on top of the moisturizer having zero effect on your skin. Be sure to pat into your skin instead of rubbing, this will help avoid wrinkles caused by pulling on our skin, and don’t forget your neck.

Step 5: Moisturize. Can you see how we are gradually increasing the thickness of our products? This is one of our final steps as your moisturizer will lock in the effects of your other products, acting as a shield from environmental factors disrupting them.

Your moisturizer is likely to be your thickest product but there is one step after this that we save for last specifically, can you guess what it is?

Step 6: SPF. Did you guess correctly? SPF is always going to be your last step because even though moisturizer is your product’s shield, your sunscreen is your skin’s knight in shining armor.

For your night time routine, you can follow the first 3 steps as in the morning, then continue with

Step 4: Moisturize. Using a thicker moisturizer at night can help rehydrate your skin from the damage the day has done. Try our REVIVE Night Cream for this step.

Step 5: Facial Oil. Since oils are pretty thick, and it is likely that you will want to avoid looking oily during your daytime festivities, we prefer to save this step for bedtime. Adding a facial oil will help bring your skin's natural oils to a perfect balance.

If you have oily skin already, it is because your skin is working double time to produce a suitable amount, so allowing it to take a break by giving it an overnight oil soak will help balance you out.

When incorporating a face mask, we recommend applying it after toning so it has that fresh, clean base to work off of, and before any serums or moisturizers since you will be washing it off. Face masks can be used 2-3 times a week depending on ingredients and your skin's sensitivity.

Serum Application

If you want to apply multiple serums to target different skin conditions, we recommend following the same process as you would for the rest of your routine—thinnest to thickest. If your serums seem to be the same consistency, then start with the one that will address your biggest skin concern.

Using more than 2 serums could halt their effectiveness, so we suggest using a maximum of 2 and alternating daily if you have more that you want to incorporate into your routine.

How Long to Wait Between Skincare Steps

You should wait until your skin has fully absorbed the first product before applying another, usually taking 1-2 minutes depending on consistency. If you apply a product before the previous has time to set, it can potentially be wiped off before it has time to soak in.
